Don’t Sweat It! What is Hyperhidrosis?

WHAT IS HYPERHIDROSIS?

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a pretty common disorder. An estimated 2%-3% of Americans suffer from excessive sweating of the underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis) or of the palms and soles of the feet (palmoplantar hyperhidrosis). Underarm problems tend to start in late adolescence, while palm and sole sweating often begins earlier, around age 13 (on average). Untreated, these problems may continue throughout life.

Here are some of the statistics reported in the medical literature related to the social and emotional impacts of Hyperhidrosis (Hh):

  • Decreased confidence and depression were reported among Hh sufferers.1a

  • Prevalence of anxiety and depression is significantly higher in those with Hh than those without Hh (21.3% vs 7.5% and 27.2% vs 9.7%, respectively).1b

  • 75% of those with excessive sweating say the condition has had negative impacts on their social life, sense of well-being, and emotional and mental health. 1d

  • 5% of Hh sufferers indicate they take antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications due to their sweating.

WHAT CAUSES HYPERHIDROSIS?

Although neurologic, endocrine, infectious, and other systemic diseases can sometimes cause hyperhidrosis, most cases occur in people who are otherwise healthy. Heat and emotions may trigger hyper hidrosis in some, but many who suffer from hyper hidrosis sweat nearly all their waking hours, regardless of their mood or the weather.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR HYPERHIDROSIS?

Botulinum A toxin (known as Botox or Dysport) treats hyperhidrosis by blocking the nerves responsible for activating your sweat glands. The treatment only prevents sweating in the specific area where it is injected.

Botox (botulinum toxin)-A, has been approved in the U.S. by the FDA for treating excessive axillary (underarm) sweating. When injected into the armpits, palms, and/or soles of feet, it can also treat palmoplantar hyper hidrosis.

Treatments in the underarm area can last up to 6 months, significantly reducing sweating.
